RIRDC website wins award

By Angela Schuster

Well, we're pretty chuffed here at SCG because the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation's (RIRDC) new website has won Sitefinity's international award for the Best Government Website.

Project managed by SCG and built by the pre-eminently capable Vivid Group, RIRDC's website reflects a bold new design for the organisation, combined with a unique but exceptionally usable interface.

A major consideration for the project was to introduce a structure and design that adhered to best practice in usability however was not the stereotypical style of government and industry websites that dominate the internet (confusing, difficult to navigate, ugly, boring, sterile, unnecessarily complicated, ugly, old-fashioned, did I mention ugly?).

An important requirement of the project was also to ensure the site was Level AA compliant against the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 - a prerequisite for any Australian Government website and, as far as we're concerned just good sense.

Combining the hundreds of research and development programs into one site, along with integrating third-party databases in a user friendly manner proved challenging to the team. But - we got there and the result, as I'm sure you'll agree, is superb.

We always knew we were on a winner with this project, it's nice to know others think the same. Jump on over to www.rirdc.gov.au and take a look for yourself.
